  • Inspiration: The story was originally improvised to entertain 10-year-old Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boat trip on the River Thames in 1862. 
  • Real-Life Alice: The character is widely believed to be inspired by Alice Liddell, whom author Charles Dodgson befriended while teaching at Christ Church College, Oxford. 
  • Genre: It is a pioneering work of "literary nonsense," credited with helping shift children's literature away from strict moral lessons to stories meant purely to entertain.
